We are commonly finding that our local grass hay is poorly balanced for the maintenance of a healthy horse. Most of our island hay has excess Non Structural Carbohydrates while the Protein and Selenium concentrations are below minimum acceptable levels. These imbalances can lead to health issues and diseases such as laminitis and weight gain and/or muscle soreness and wasting. It is imperative to have your horse’s hay tested and evaluated with your veterinarian.
