May Case of the Month: Broken Mandible
Some horses can get overly excited during feeding time. Unfortunately for this mare, she somehow got her lower jaw wedged between the metal bars of her stall. In her panic, she pulled back breaking the left side of her mandible! This was seen immediately, and she was sent for surgery at Equerry Sports Medicine and Surgery right away. Within a few hours, the two sides of her broken mandible were wired closely together, and the mare was sent home. Through her recovery, she expelled several pieces of loose bone chips but is making a full recovery. Luckily, the integrity and alignment of her teeth were unaffected. She is eating well, being ridden and besides the healing callous of her lower left jaw, you would not know anything so traumatic had happened.
