October: An Update on Bella – The Rescue from September!

Bella has continued to progress well from the injuries she sustained during her fall on the bridge in August, but her owners noticed that she had developed a tract draining pus and blood at the top of her healing wound. Radiographs of her right forelimb revealed that Bella had developed a sequestrum from her radius. A sequestrum is a fragment of bone that forms after the blood supply to an area of bone is compromised (often through a blunt trauma) and the bone dies. Once the piece of bone has died, the body works at trying to expel it out through the skin. The wound was opened and extended far enough to remove the sliver of dead bone before closing the skin. Now that the bone is removed, Bella is healing well and her owner has a memento to forever remember this scary event.
